How to read a character arc
A character arc is a pattern of tested beliefs and consequential choices, not simply a list of events that happen to someone.
Start with the operating belief
Ask what the character thinks will keep them safe, respected or loved. That belief may be sensible, mistaken or incomplete. Early scenes usually demonstrate it before the plot challenges it.
Pressure reveals priorities
Conflict removes easy options. A revealing decision costs something and shows which value wins. Repeated tests can deepen commitment or expose a contradiction.
Relationships are mirrors
Friends, rivals and mentors offer competing models of action. Changes become legible when a character begins responding to the same person in a new way.
Power is not the whole arc
