Anime formats explained
TV, film, OVA and ONA are production and release formats. They hint at structure, but they do not guarantee quality or genre.
Television series
TV anime is organized around broadcast or streaming episodes, commonly grouped into cours of roughly one season. The format encourages recurring hooks and episode-scale structure, although release patterns vary.
Theatrical films
A film offers a continuous runtime and a cinema-sized presentation. Some tell self-contained stories; others continue a series and assume prior knowledge. A larger screen does not automatically mean a larger schedule.
OVA, ONA and specials
An original video animation is released for home video rather than initial broadcast. An original net animation debuts online. Specials cover everything from bonus comedy to essential continuations, so placement matters more than the label alone.
